It is compulsory for all students in Germany to take out a
health insurance. You have to proof that your health insurance
is valid before you can register at a university. The compulsory
health insurance is connected with a compulsory nursing insurance
(to cover the risk of being in need of care). Your health
insurance covers the risk of nursing at the same time.
One question is important:
Are you coming from a EU country or not?
a) Students coming from EU
or EEC*) countries or from Switzerland:
A social security agreement exists with those countries. You
need a European ID card to register, which will be issued
by the health insurance of your native country. With the help
of this certificate you can acquire a certain letter at a
German legitimate health insurance (certificate of liberation
for the German health insurance), which you need to register.
This will be your health insurance in charge during the entire
period of your stay in Germany.
In case you have a private health insurance, you need a written
confirmation from your health insurance company, stating that
your entire study period will be covered.
Important: A travel insurance will not be accepted!
b) Students coming from countries
not stated in a):
You need a health insurance certificate of a German legitimate
health insurance in order to register. The current monthly
fee you need to pay for your health insurance incl. nursing
insurance is 54.- €. Students pay the same amount at
all legitimate health insurances. You are free to choose from
all legitimate health insurances. On the spot you will find
e.g. branches of the compulsory medical insurance (http://www.aok.de).
However, you can also choose any other legitimate health insurance.
Various health insurances sometimes offer different payment
schemes. Therefore it is recommended to inform yourself in
advance in order to avoid nasty surprises.

Important: the fee of the
legitimate health insurance for students mentioned above is
meant for students not older than 30 and/or until semester
14; the fee is not applicable for graduate students studying
for a doctorate; if you are a student over 30, you need a
certificate of liberation of a German health insurance.
If you take part in the SOKRATES/ERASMUS
programme, you have to consider and follow the same procedures
as mentioned in a) and b). Within the SOKRATES/ERASMUS programme
you often have the opportunity of a contact person on the
spot. Moreover, you will find an academic office for foreign
affairs in every university. That is the spot where you receive
further local as well as university specific information.
*) EEC = European Common
Market; In 1992 an agreement was signed by EU and EFTA countries,
which had the expansion of the home market of the EC with
the EFTA countries Norway, Liechtenstein and Iceland as a
consequence.
